The Wigg Party was proud to participate in the latest San Francisco Carrotmob this past Sunday at Duboce Park Cafe. The event marked our first foray into public consciousness, and we can be sure more people know about us this week than last.
While we had the date circled and had been working for weeks to plan and promote, things really got started Saturday night with a wig(g) making gathering followed by a late night chalk graffiti session on the Wiggle. It really was quite an experience to be out on the Wiggle at 2 am on a Saturday night – lots of smiles and good cheer from passersby on bikes and foot alike, and more than a couple people doing the Wobble. Sure enough we weren’t out there more than 30 minutes before the friends started piling up and it turned into an out-right Wigg Party Party.
We went to bed knowing that tomorrow’s Wigglers wouldn’t be playing the part of Mr. Jones tomorrow.
Waking up to the best weather of the year reinforced our sense that this was going to be a special day. With morning stretching, recollecting, brunching and wig inspecting, it was 2 pm before we knew it and it was time to whip up the mob mentality. Our ride down the Wiggle proved to be mildly disappointing, as we discovered that chalk doesn’t stand up well under the tremendous crush of the death monsters (the bike only parts were well kept), but this only made our decision to throw down some freshies even easier. The Party got to work.
Time to hit the line – we were feeling thirsty in the hot sun and we were eager to do some Wiggle evangelizing. We wanted to know if people knew what the Wiggle was, how often they rode or walked it, who had a CSA box, how often people shopped at farmers’ markets and how important sustainable business practices were to people. The results from those tests haven’t come back from the lab yet, but we quickly found out that we looked really good in our wigs.
We worked the crowd, danced among the sun-worshipers in Duboce Park, raised our glasses to the passing N trains, and had more than our share of smoothies and Sierras. As the day went on, our old friends kept rolling in and we kept making new ones. We met Brent the Original Carrotmobber, a photographer for a big Japanese sustainable living magazine, and we even met a guy who, no joke, has been working on a song and dance about the Wiggle (early indications are promising). We even found some time to do a little light reading and heavy serenading.
The three hours passed quickly what with all the hobnobbing and carrot jokes (what’s orange and sounds like a parrot?). Before we could groan, it was off to the Panhandle to finish off the Sunday Funday with a fierce game of Sloshball.
All in all it was a great success. We haven’t heard the final numbers yet but you can bet Duboce Park Cafe raised a good deal of money to cover some of the up-front costs of making their business more sustainable, and that really was the whole idea. Getting the word out about The Wigg Party and looking good while doing it is what you would call the bonus round.
